Heading home.

Mile 2789. Engine working. Temperature becoming bearable Waiting for Race

Harvest moon

We decided to head straight down to Montauk across the top of Long Island. It was a pleasant sail. When I called Montauk Marina I asked about availability of slips and he said you could try by the bulkhead. Try? I asked and then he confirmed with someone and assured me it was ok. Well it was the tightest entrance I had ever made and when we were docked the depth showed 0.7ft underneath. Joelle who helped us in also helped us out and it all went very smoothly.

Our Nieghbour Jon gave us a bottle of champagne to celebrate with and so we are using it today to celebrate Race arriving and the start of our return.

New Jersey shores are probably the toughest I’ve ever gone into. The waves were six foot and we surfed into the inlet in Barnaget. It made Ponce Inlet look like a pond. We met Dave and Joesephine there and joined them again in Atlantic City. I was hoping to make some money on the slot machines. Lost twenty dollars in less than a minute. I’d hate to know how much the other people who are there lose just pulling on those machines.

I went back to the pub I worked in 40 years ago and was delighted that it hadn’t changed and that Dick and Cathy still owned it. Atlantic City was a dive then and is even more of a dive now. When we did our shop there was a fight between two women as we went in. One woman calling the other names I couldn’t repeat 😱 and while we waited for the taxi there was a drug deal right beside us. The food was very reasonably priced though.

We’ve really just been sailing down to Norfolk to make time. The first night sail was beautiful as it was almost full moon.

  2. Love hearing all Jane, but omg, how scary pulling the boat into the slip w .7ft of water…. surely terrifying? But nothing seems to scare you. Don’t know how you do it all. Just amazing and wonderful…

  4. Another enjoyable read. You are the talked about each Wednesday when The Old Men of the Sea” meet. Nice to see at least one of the sailboats at the yacht club being used the way it was intended. Looking forward to seeing you and Patrick when you return.
