Waiting out the weather in (of all places !) CAPE FEAR

Sept 15th

As I was starting to write this blog, Pat said we did good mileage yesterday. Well yes, of course! at one stage there was 37 kn of wind. It was pretty hairy coming into the marina, particularly since it was after six pm and there were no dock hands to take our lines, but fortunately one guy who had just come in and had had terrible trouble docking rushed over to help. I was very pleased when he complimented me on the handling of her in the high wind. It probably says a lot when I can get her in a dock in high winds without a scratch but on easy days …

A stiff drink at the bar to calm my nerves. It’s been raining so hard that we haven’t managed to walk around much but from what we have seen it is a beautiful place.

A lot of old houses and I guess as there’s no widows walk on this one the girl waits on the swing

We’ve been playing a lot of poker and quiddler. I wish I had real money on that hand.

Once again we had a lovely time at Lambs marina. Our Neighbour’s were great craic and Marcia gave me some delicious canned salmon to take on our journey.

Larry only charged us for one night as it wasn’t our fault we had to wait for the deliveries.💕

We spent the trip down Alligator canal in the lazarett trying to fix the manual bilge but it’s still not working so we’ve bought a portable electric one from ACE. God help us if the electric crashed at the same time.

The usual sights of beautiful houses and quirky things along the ICW.

Including bright sunrises and sunken yachts.

We anchored at Camp Lejeune where the marines practice their flying and target practice. I love watching those jets fly by.

Beaufort NC. is as always lovely. There were more super yachts there than I’ve seen before. Filling up with 3000 gallons + of fuel. We met up with a captain of one of these yachts. I don’t know that it would be my preferred profession.

I have to say the waiting, the damp and my sore knee are not the best parts of the trip. But isn’t that the way you can judge how good it is when you compare? It looks like we can leave Southport on Tuesday. After what looks like will be a rough day on Monday.

  1. Those are some crazy docking conditions. Good for you and Pat. There appears to be no fear on with M’Aingel on Cape Fear. Love the old architecture. Give me a jingle an hour before you return to SYC and I will be happy to help with your dock lines and fix you both up with a pint :0) Until then, sail on Captain.

      1. I enjoyed Southport. A nice maritime museum to see if you get a chance. It was there I learned of Robert Small and how he made off with the ship, “Planter”, along with his friends to escape slavery. Quite a seagoing story.

      2. No. You told Brian and I about Southport. He and I stopped there for lunch and a stretch on our drive home after sailing with you to Virginia.
