Wormley Creek and the start of America. Aug 21-24

Chesapeake the first voyage from Capt. John Smith

Following the first storm the night we arrived, the weather was perfect. We decided to stay here as Forrest (sadly) was leaving us and we could get to the airport easily.

It’s the perfect place to stop as it’s smack bang in the middle of York town, Williamsburg and Jamestown. So plenty of history to see.

Morning reveille

Also we were beside the coast guard and had Taps and Morning Revielle 8am and 8pm with an added cannon blast on the Friday. (I’m glad I was warned).

Happy as
….

I’m beginning to wonder just how broken Pat’s toe was. he loved using the little buggy’s and wheelchairs and all the attention of everybody saying oh Pat, how is your toe?

Williamsburg has all the old houses and people dressed and acting in their gear and I couldn’t fault the guide in the old Episcopalian church for his enthusiasm. It’s quite awesome to be sitting where Jefferson,Washington and La Fayette all sat to pray and meet.

Angel of peace

Jamestown is very beautiful, but it reminded me of Mary Magdalene’s church that we went to in Jordan and for that reference I have to tell you the story in person. Suffice to say it was just a lump of stones around various areas and a lot of Canadian geese.

We were sorry to see Forrest go. Like a little boy off to his first day at school

Well I guess they might find the beard a bit dubious in school.

We are now travailing up the Chesapeake to some really beautiful anchorages. Urbanna is one of the oldest towns. I was really charmed by it, especially when we got off at the dinghy dock and a young 15-year-old boy said he’d show me where the restaurants, liquor store and points of interest in the town. It is a one street town. He was a commercial fisherman and when I asked him was he not young for that he said he was also a landscape gardener and showed me one of the gardens that he works on. When we went into the ice cream shop/bar/restaurant the girl behind the counter knew him and said he is fantastic. She insisted that we try three or four different ice creams before we settle for a tub which is all very well, but she gave us massive spoonfuls and I was full before we even got the tub which we ate at the bar

The Anchorage is beautiful and peaceful, and we have now moved on to Onnancock. Also, very beautiful there is only one thing missing in this…… Wind.

This is the reason why I said travailing rather than Sailing. But it is all very pleasant and we are off today to Tangier Island

  1. Hi Darli’,

It’s lovely to see you enjoying our old stomping grounds! We got engaged in Colonial Williamsburg & have so many beautiful memories of boat life on the Chesapeake Bay. Great harbors & great seafood! Please let Pat know that ice cream is the best remedy for a broken toe ~ you know that whole calcium, strong bone thing 😉😊

Love your blog, stay safe & well! 😘

  2. Jane all fascinating and beautiful and lyrical…love the patriotism there. What, did Pat break his toe?? Wow.

Someday I hope to see a movie about you and Pat, people don’t read books so much now…

So bedazzled by all, the photos, the writing, the fun…the ice cream…

  3. I believe Onnancock is where Sharon and Bill Wills use to live. Always enjoy reading your sea tales. Patrick

  4. Jane, if you plan to sail up the western shore of the Chesapeake , I hope you make it to Solomons, Maryland. That was my favorite stop-over during our cruise from Maine to Florida with Matt R. last fall.

We miss you at the club.
